The Language Ladder provides a fully flexible way of learning or improving your Russian. The Russian Ladder course is designed for independent learners wanting to progress their language skills in order to function confidently in a Russian speaking environment.

The course is split into 'Steps' so you can choose your starting point and progress up the ladder at your own pace. In addition, all enrolled students are able to access the supporting 'basics' and 'grammar booster' sessions.

The Russian Ladder

Where do I start?
The basics

To get you started, the basics series is focused on groups of vocabulary you'll need to progress through the steps of The Russian Ladder. This series is free to access at any point if you need to remind yourself of the basics. The series includes sessions on simple greetings, numbers, colours, days of the week, months of the year and more.

Step 1

You've mastered the basic greetings. You're ready to start using the language. Step 1 will get you going with conversational language for practical use: making introductions, simple exchanges in shops, and restaurants, getting around town and coping with travel and hotels. Step 1 focuses on practical language without delving too deeply into the underlying grammar so you can start communicating and building your confidence.

Step 2

This step is aimed at learners who are already fairly confident with simple exchanges. You can greet people, order a coffee... communication just breaks down a little when the responses come back in rapid, garbled Russian! Step 2 builds on the situations encountered in Step 1, adding depth and breadth. We look into more detail at the mechanics of the language - how to use adjectives when describing people, how to talk about your travel plans in the future, and the past. As well as giving you more variety of vocabulary to use, this step begins to develop your understanding of the nuts and bolts of the language which is your first step to independent, adaptable language use.
